The purpose of the App is to provide a mobile responsive information and decision support tool resource for registered healthcare professionals which will help to determine the need for special requirements for transfusion in 'at risk' patient groups.

Special requirements include the need for irradiated, Cytomegalovirus or hepatitis E negative components. The 'at risk' patient groups include haematology, immunodeficiency, neonates, obstetrics and solid organ transplant.

The App is aligned to best practice and national guidelines (Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT), British Committee for Standards in Haematology (BCSH), Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues & Organs (SaBTO). The App will support contributing to the patient safety agenda and address the potential risks to patients highlighted by SHOT.
